Meet the Team – Stephen Hume

1. What is your position at BPD Zenith?

“I am a Senior Maximo Consultant, as well as the founder and facilitator of the Maximo Technical User Group (MaxTECH).”

~Stephen currently working from home~

2. What led you to choose this career path? What alternative career path would you have chosen and why?

“I have worked as a computer programmer, analyst, project manager and consultant for most of my career.  I chose this path once I graduated from University when I realized my technical aptitude and also the career opportunities that “computers” offered.  I originally studied Economics and Urban Planning at University and envisioned myself working for a city in some planning department  (Building and planning the ultimate urban environment).  If it was not such a stressful job, I would have enjoyed being a chef in another life.

3. Which part of your job do you most enjoy?

“I get the most satisfaction from delivering a creative solution to a user’s dilemma using Maximo.  Maximo is a great development platform with a suite of configuration tools.  I have been a problem solver for most of my career, working for several years at a railway, solving the Y2K bug, co-ordinating business systems at the Calgary Winter Olympics.  All the while keeping business users delighted along the way.

4. What do you like about working at BPD Zenith?

“BPD gives me the freedom to follow some of my key passions, that is travel and teaching.  I have started the Maximo Technical User Group (MaxTECH) and have seen it grow to a huge group over the past couple of years.  There is an immense thirst for technical knowledge when it comes to Maximo.”

5. What are the values that drive you?

“Hard work, quest for knowledge, sharing knowledge and ideas, honesty, and being inclusive of all people.”

6. What do you enjoy doing when you are not working?

“I enjoy playing bridge, fishing, travelling, walking our dog, going to the gym for group fitness classes, cooking.  A favourite pastime in the winter months is watching British Murder Mysteries, Detective Shows, and Police Dramas on Acorn TV (like Netflix for fans of BBC, ITV and Australian TV).”

7. What’s a work-related accomplishment you’re really proud of?

“There are a few recent awards and recognitions that make me really proud.  I received recognition from IBM as an IBM Champion for all of the extra work I do promoting and teaching Maximo.  MaxTECH received a Platinum User Group award from IBM as well.”

8. What’s your favourite way to unwind after a busy day?

“To unwind every day, take the dog for a long walk as soon as I get home, then either head to the gym for a fitness class, or plan dinner for the evening.  I do all (or most of) the cooking at home, and rarely if ever use pre-packaged food.  Favourite type of cooking right now is inventing something new for the slow cooker. No Instant-Pot in this household, good food takes time to prepare.”

9. What would we most likely find you doing on the weekend?

“The weekends in Canada vary depending on the time of year, in the winter you will find me visiting friends, going to see live music somewhere (even if getting on a plane is involved), once in a blue moon – cross country skiing.  In the summer months, I will likely be fishing, kayaking, travelling to see out of town friends.”
