Maximo® Version 4 to 7.1 Upgrade

BPD Zenith have been supporting Maximo® for this client since November 2002 and have assisted with various projects during our tenure.

The client was aware of the imminent removal of version 4 from support (for more information on this click here). BPD Zenith working with a local support partner, were asked to carry out a cost justification with a choice between an upgrade of Maximo® or a move to SAP.

The client still retained ACSP for Maximo® so there were no additional license costs as they did not require more users. The client therefore moved forward with Maximo®.

BPD and the support partner were successful in their bid for this upgrade and the project commenced in June 2008.

What's new in Maximo® 7.1

A comprehensive document from IBM highlighting the additional features of the newest Maximo® Version

The system was heavily customised Maximo® 4.1 running on Windows with 3 interfaces: SAP, Barcoding and a Purchasing Card system. There were 140 reports on the existing system and after a review it was found that some were not needed, others could be written using the KPI and results set (a feature available in 6.2) so only 68 of the SQR reports needed to be transferred to BIRT.

30 KPI's were built for specific users and a comprehensive training program was implemented. The client adopted a 'train the trainer approach' and BPD trained the client IT personnel and helped them to develop the materials for their in-house training courses. In all 200 people were successfully retrained.

The project took 10 months to complete and cost £160K (ex. VAT). Mid-way through the project it was decided that the upgrade would go to Maximo® 7.1 instead of the planned 6.2. What came out of this was that there are significant differences between these two versions of Maximo® and

we encountered a number of "new release" features which needed patching.
